Dog Behaviour Modification
In-home behaviour consultations with Allyson addresses behavourial issues including:
-
Dog to Dog Aggression while on leash
The main behavioural problems for dogs are issues with aggression. The list is long, but the most common issue is aggression towards other dogs, especially when your dog is on a leash. Allyson teaches your dog to ignore other dogs while on leash without any form of correction. Anytime corrections are used, it will likely exacerbate the problems. Showing your dog how to effectively ignore other dogs on leash, creates a relaxing, enjoyable bonding time for both you and your dog. -
Dog to Dog Aggression in the home (Sibling Rivalry)
All too often, dogs living in the same home can't effectively work out their relationship, sometimes resulting in aggressive interactions. In most cases, this can be resolved by teaching the dogs rules, thus creating an understanding between them. Direction, not correction teaches the dogs how to communicate effectively so aggression isn't necessary to resolve the issues. -
Dog Aggression towards humans
Another common form of aggression is towards humans. This can be directed towards people the dog knows or strangers. When teaching a dog to trust or ignore humans, Allyson uses only kind methods to assure the dog there is no danger or threat. Once the dog understands the owner will control the situation, they relax and are more confident dogs. -
Dog Aggression towards Cats (or other pets in the home)
Many times dogs and cats have a difficult relationship because the pets don't understand the rules of the house or that the humans are the leaders. Neither the dog nor the cat should be in charge. Teaching all the pets what the rules are and that the humans will control their interactions with kind and clear rules, creates a happier environment for all. -
Fearful behaviour
Generally, fear in dogs is due to genetics, lack of socialization or bad experiences during the fear periods. Teaching a fearful dog to read the world effectively is the key to lessening or eliminating the fear. The key to success with these types of behavioural issues are setting realistic expectations. A very fearful dog many never be a "greeter dog" but can learn to live a low stress, happy life with the correct guidance. -
Excessive Barking
Barking, while a natural behaviour, should never be a nuisance to the owner or a hobby for the dog. All dogs can be taught with direction and no corrections, not to nuisance bark. Dogs are observers and as such, love to watch the world around them. Allyson teaches dogs to observe without reacting. Barking should be a warning when there is a threat, not a constant rude behaviour. -
Separation Anxiety (stress when alone)
Dogs in today's world must be left alone while owners work, often for many hours. In the dog world this isn't normal and can create a great deal of stress for your dog. Teaching dogs to be comfortable while alone can be a slow process but generally very successful. Kind solutions are effective in teaching dogs to understand being alone isn't a punishment, just a part of life. -
Leash walking
Direction not correction is the rule when Allyson teaches you and your dog proper leash etiquette. No choke chains, pinch collars, shock collars or other tools that teach, using aversion training.Teaching your dog to walk without pulling you down the street is better accomplished using methods that reward acceptable behaviour rather then punish unwanted behaviour. Remember, walking is one of the bigger joys in the life of your dog, Allyson will teach you how to make it a great and fun experience for you both.
